Body image, Jennifer Hawkins & marie claire

Gird your loins, girls. The gloves are off and the magazine world is at war over body image and airbrushing writes editor, Melissa Ironside.

It must be a slow news week (no more Tiger Woods mistresses want to come forward?) because the newspapers and blogs are having a field day with the latest marie claire magazine cover.

Debate is raging over whether an unretouched image (A.K.A. unairbrushed piccie) of a nude Jennifer Hawkins on the cover of this month's marie claire magazine is a good and realistic example to young women.

marie claire editor Jackie Frank has told blogger Melissa Hoyer that while Jennifer is genetically blessed it is still a brave thing for her to put her body out there for all to see. "No one has considered the point that Jen has made a living out of her body and that makes it even braver to put herself out on a limb imperfections and all," she said. "Very few celebrities would do this and she deserves a pat on the back for putting that message out there. We are saying that nobody is perfect and even Jen has had her insecurities. Women need to give themselves a brake. We are hardest on each other!"

Jen Hawkins herself tells marie claire that she wouldn't have done this shoot two years ago: “I would have been worried about what people thought, whether it was the right decision – a thousand different things… But over the past year and a half I’ve grown into myself, and I’m more confident and comfortable within the modelling industry. I did it for the experience… It felt quite sensual and sexy. I felt empowered.”

That sounds pretty positive to me!

But not everyone agrees. Radio host Bianca Dye says that Jen is naturally stunning which presents an unfair image to women who, like herself, have "a pot belly and thighs". Bianca has put her money where her mouth is posing in all her glory for madison magazine not too long ago.

So what do you think? Is Jennifer a positive role model to women or do naked pictures of models simply make us feel bad about ourselves?

I think Jen looks fantastic but to say she has 'flaws' is ridiculous... isn't it natural to have creases when sitting? The 'uneven' skintone is her fake tan and the dimples on her thigh are from the way she is sitting... if these are flaws then god help the rest of us!

I think you can't have "Miss Universe" to be a positive body role model when she isn't the norm. Her body image is unattainable to most girls, teens and women and all it is really about is selling magazines. I think its quite naive to think this won't contribute to many girls and women having a lower self esteem when it comes to their body image so it will in fact have the complete opposite affect.
What you put a "perfect" looking model with barely a flaw naked and un-airbrushed and that's supposed to make "me" feel good about my own body? Yeah right!

I am defnintely in 2 minds on this topic.
I am HUGELY in favour of more celebs/catwalk models showing their stuff without touch ups and photoshopping. I personally think that Jen has an enviable body, and appreciate that she does not leave anyone deluded when it comes to the work that goes into getting that body. However, she is a "model" and in being that, her flaws to the average woman with pretty average body insecurities means that seeing her body naked means that we can no longer comfort ourselves by saying "I bet that they don't look that good naked/unphotoshopped" So...in short, great that she did it and took a stand...not so great that uneditted she still looks fantastic and has the ability to make us feel more pressured.

it states she bared all for charity....i applaude that.
how many models did they approach for the nude photo-shoot? and if jennifer did not want to be airbrushed, then she knows she looks good, cmon flaws u say honey?
....hey,they may have taken 100's of pics of which this one definately camouflaged them or totally hid them....and she looks stunning
jennifer may cause more insecurities to women out there about how they feel as compared to her looks, but its not her fault.....she is strikingly beautiful and blessed with great genes
women need to feel confident and proud in who they are and how they feel about themselves=the media has a lot to answer for with respect to reaching the un-attainable looks of these covergirls-but the magazines sell for that reason........the young ,gorgeous, fit, tanned.supermodel looks will always sell, because its the fantasy ,the dream which keeps them wanting more
