Chardonnay, is it love or hate...?
The loveable old chardy has come a long way from it’s heavy oak days and big buttery flavours. There is a definite trend amongst young winemakers these days to produce a lighter style of Chardonnay which is clean and crisp. Many are moving away from the heavy oak towards a more elegant and refined French style Chardonnay. I have personally learnt to appreciate them both and particularly enjoy a chardonnay with a rich and saucy chicken or fish dish.
According to the trade Chardonnay continues to be the number one best selling white wine in the country. However, after a year of talking and supplying wine to my friends, Sauvignon Blanc seems to be my most popular request. For some reason I don’t have that many Chardonnay drinkers around me. So where are they?
If like most of my friends you’re only into Sauvignon Blanc, Sparkling and Rose it’s probably been a while since you’ve had a glass of Chardonnay. Maybe the thought and smell of chardonnay alone makes you want to run a mile! However, if you’re feeling up to the challenge I can add a Chardy or two to your next mixed dozen. Let your taste buds decide if it’s love or hate!
